With the recent upsurge and renewed interest by filmmakers
in depicting the Martial Art skills of the Orient, it is no surprise that film
makers have turned their attention to one of the most profound and unique
martial arts, namely the ancient Samurai art of Japanese Sword or Katana, one
of the most powerful weapons ever to have been created. The Katana was the most
deadly weapon of the ancient Samurai and the art of Kenjutsu, the most revered
of all. The Japanese Sword has a history dating back more than 1000 years, the
Japanese Sword being one of the three cultural and religious symbols of Japan.
With the recent release, public acceptance and enjoyment of recent films, such
as “Kill Bill”, “The Last Samurai” and “Zatoichi”, a whole new genre of
Oriental martial art sword art films are now in focus. Numerous
Oscars and other mega film awards have highlighted the public interest in
ancient, though obscure, martial art skills, passed down through the centuries
to the present day by ancient Samurai warriors. In line with this renewed
interest in the art of Kenjutsu, the Zen Shin Do Kenjutsu Kai, Japanese Sword
School, is offering tuition in these ancient ways to students from the age of
12 upwards with no upper age limit, in fact, the main core student body age’s
range from 12-75. A keen junior section takes great interest in the Samurai
arts, in particular Kenjutsu and an enhanced interest in the culture of the
Orient and the way of the Samurai.
Student’s safety is of course high on the agenda in the
class. Stringent safety rules ensure that all students know and understand the
implications of their potentially dangerous art form. All students start off
using the bokken or wooden sword and when reaching a certain level of ability
are allowed to use a replica blunt sword, again with absolute attention to
their safety. Many students joining the class have studied other martial arts
before joining Kenjutsu, these arts include Judo. Karate, Jujitsu, Kendo etc.
but they seem to find the ultimate art of Kenjutsu stimulating, and they show
great satisfaction in learning the ancient Samurai art of Swordsmanship.
